Thanking The Helpers

Fred Rogers (a.k.a. Mr. Rogers) shared a memory once of his mother’s advice during difficult or frightening times.

“When I was a boy and I would see scary things in the news, my mother would say to me, “Look for the helpers. You will always find people who are helping.”

Today, I am thankful for the people in my life who are the helpers.  I see you, all around me, making this world a better place.  I may not remember to tell you in the moment, but you need to know that I see you, and that other people see you, too.

I see you reaching out to tired, hungry, and sick friends who are too weary to manage for themselves.  I see you giving second chances, and thirds, and fourths.  I see you willing to stand alone against powerful forces that seem unstoppable in their greed and influence.  I see you having faith when faith is in short supply.  I see you willing to have that tough conversation with your kids so they can grow into even better people.  I see you saying no when it is difficult, and yes when it is even more difficult.  I see you choosing to focus on the best, and to let the worst dissolve from memory.  I see you giving things a little more time.  I see you.

This Thanksgiving Day, my helper friends, I just want you to know that I see you.   And I am grateful for you, today and always.
